10-Year-Old Girl’s Bleeding Bullet Wound Mistaken For Her First Period

We don’t have kids who are of age yet to start their period, but we can imagine some of the feelings we’ll have when she eventually confronts us with that very natural passage in a woman’s life. Worry, concern, and a little bit of sadness at how our kids are actually growing into adults (not yet yet not yet not yet…). We’re ready, but not. How can you ever be?

Imagine those feeling when the parents of a 10-year-old girl who woke up at 2 a.m. to tell her parents that she was bleeding “down there.” According to ABC News, the parents called their family doctor, who said the bleeding was “consistent with menstruation.” The girl went back to bed (probably after a very lengthy and exhausting birds-and-bees chat with mom) and woke up later for school with even stronger cramping pains.

The parents searched her bed and found — wait for it — bullet holes! Their daughter had been shot overnight in a drive-by shooting. After a thorough body inspection, the parents also located an entry wound on their daughter, which was small and easy to miss.

Police say they have yet to identify a motive for the shooting and think the family may have been targeted by mistake.

The girl is said to be in stable condition in the hospital, and we sincerely hope she is able to make a quick recovery.
