Katherine Langford Breaks Silence on the ‘13 Reasons Why’ Controversy
It’s no secret that 13 Reasons Why is an extraordinarily controversial show.
The cast has had plenty to say on that matter — now Hannah Baker actress Katherine Langford adds her voice to the fray.
Netflix’s breakout teen drama has been accused of treating suicide in both a glamorous and graphic manner, leading the show to become the most tweeted about program of 2017.
Katherine assured Jimmy Fallon that she understands why the show has been so polarizing for fans.
“[I] think we cover so many important issues in the show that are going to affect people differently depending on their own personal context."
The 21-year-old actress was quick to validate the viewer response, "And I'm like, everyone's feelings are valid, so I'm not going to tell anyone to feel anything differently.”
But she made sure to praise the show for the way it handles those heavy topics.
“But personally being directly involved in the show and seeing the thought and consideration that went into it — also being a young adult, playing a young adult, and covering issues that are relevant — I feel really proud of the way we covered it and the way we showed things."
Despite all the drama, for Katherine, just having people talk about the show at all is a victory.
"Of course there's controversy. I think things like these instigate discussion, which is the important part.”
