The 9 Best Summer Blockbusters of the ’90s (VIDEO)

Summer movie season is upon us, and you know what? We kind of miss the good old days of summer blockbusters. The 1990s were a golden age of cinematic thrill rides — and Clevver breaks down nine of the best for us. Check out some of their picks below, but make sure to watch the video for the full list!

9. Mission: Impossible, 1996. Scarface director Brian DePalma and first-time producer Tom Cruise collaborated on this critically-unpopular but high-grossing first in a franchise. Remember that sweet scene with Tom Cruise hacking into a CIA database while suspended in the air?!

8. Speed, 1994. Explosions, hostages, Keanu Reeves’s cardboard one-liners (What do you do. What do you do.)... what more could you want? Do not confuse Speed for Speed 2, though — it's why Sandra Bullock doesn't do sequels anymore.

7. Men In Black, 1997. This Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones-led action flick was a surprise hit, but what did everyone expect? There's a talking pug.

6. Independence Day, 1996. Another hit for Will Smith! This sci-fi explosion features the most epic speech of all epic speeches of all cinematic history… and Jeff Goldblum. Instant classic!

5. Saving Private Ryan, 1998. Steven Spielberg's WWII effort featured a cast full of both mega-stars and before-they-weres, including Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Adam Goldberg, Vin Diesel, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti, Bryan Cranston, Nathan Fillion… plus some incredibly engrossing, exciting, and soul-crushing battle scenes.

4. Lion King, 1994. We have incredible respect for a Disney film that's not afraid to real-talk. Plus, Jonathan Taylor Thomas was little Simba, so.

The top three picks include a 1999 flick that bent your mind like so many spoons and a 1991 sequel that gave us one of the '90s most pervasive catchphrases. You can probably guess what number one is — some of us are still having nightmares about porta-potties, thank you very much.

Which '90s summer blockbusters are your favorites? Let us know in the comments!
