How Does Maggie Q Stay So Slim? We Divulge Nikita’s Diet Secret!
Okay, we know all the gratuitous shots of Maggie Q traipsing in a skimpy cherry red monokini for the pilot were there for the dudes whose girlfriends actually managed to get them to watch Nikita — but we found ourselves picking our jaws up off the floor, too! Just how does Maggie maintain the body of a supermodel (last we checked, she’s only 103 pounds!) when she’s got a fitness regimen to rival an MMA fighter?
The secret may be in her diet: Maggie has been a vegan for several years and a vocal advocate of animal rights. PETA, known for their racy billboards encouraging red-blooded males everywhere to “Go Vegetarian,” obviously loves her, and in 2008, she was named PETA’s Person Of The Year. “I feel better, I have more energy on and off the set, and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I’m doing something to help stop animal suffering,” she said of her vegan diet in 2008.
For those of you lifelong Philly cheese steak devotees, veganism is like vegetarianism-ultra: in addition to giving up meat, vegans also don’t eat dairy (later, Haagen Daas!), eggs (buh-bye, Denver omelette!) and a lot of other foods you’d be surprised to know contain animals products (marshmallows, many breads and pastas, most chocolate, and in some extreme diets, honey.) Vegans replace the protein from meats with high-protein, low-fat foods such as lentils, beans and soy. Other famous vegans? Glee’s singing sensation, Lea Michele.
Of course, not every action diva has to go vegan — svelt Salt superstar Angelina Jolie was animal-free for several years, but went back to eating meat when she reportedly became malnourished (which often happens to vegans who don’t eat a balanced diet). Her beauty secret now? “A big, juicy steak.”
