ABC Family Orders Sara Shepard’s The Lying Game and More

Pretty Little Liars will be in good company. Why? Well because ABC Family is on a pilot purchasing spree. The network just ordered four new shows, in addition to the three that were requested last week. Among these programs is The Lying Game, based on the soon to be released book by PLL author Sara Shepard. ABC Family is aiming high, but we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

First up is What Would Jane Do?, a drama about a 16-year-old who gets hired as a full time assistant for a design company. Staff mistake her for an adult and suddenly she has a job working for a high powered executive. Jane has to balance her life as a high school student with this demanding career, while trying to protect her secret. We can’t wait to see the fashion and the problems unfold.

When you need a good laugh, there’s The Great State of Georgia, a half-hour comedy about a plus-sized performer from the south and her science geek best friend who try to make it in New York City. Now that ABC Family’s series Huge has been cancelled, the network hopes this show, also about a plus-sized heroine, can take its place. It will be hard to fill Nikki Blonsky’s shoes, but we’re curious anyways.

Although a name has yet to be given, ABC Family ordered a third program by executive producer Brenda Hampton, the creator of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and 7th Heaven. It’s about four ethnically-diverse teenage girls in California and their families. The pilot will follow the girls at their private school, as well as their difficult home lives. One has a parent with terminal cancer, another has an extremely strict father and a third has a brother with a behavioral disorder. This show sounds more serious, but equally interesting.

Last but not least is The Lying Game. Rumors arose last week that ABC Family would pick up this show, but now it’s official. Shepard’s novel doesn’t come out until December, but after the success of PLL, ABC Family has a good feeling about this project. The story is about a foster child, Emma, who realizes she has an identical twin sister living with a wealthy family. Emma covers for her twin, Sutton, for a few days before Sutton suddenly goes missing. How long can the lying game go on? Will Emma get away with pretending to be her twin?

Each show takes on a different tone, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from ABC Family. Will you watch these pilots? Which sounds the most interesting?
