America's Next Top Model

Exclusive: ANTM’s Chris Spills on Tyra’s Cake Eating and Why Esther Faked Keeping Kosher

Personality, personality, personality. Being a Top Model is all about personality. So then why exactly did bubbly Chris get sent home this week? It seemed — as Chelsey would gladly tell you — that Chris didn’t want it enough. Jane wanted it so much that she finally broke down in tears at panel, while Chris just wanted to rest her hurt foot and crack some jokes back home in Texas with her sister, Terra. Alas, now we’re left with four models whose personalities combined can barely equal Chris’ effervescence. We chatted with Chris about Tyra’s candid advice, Esther’s suspicious behavior, and why Ann should not win the competition.

Chelsey and the other girls have their doubts about you wanting to win as much as the other girls. Did you really want to be a model when you tried out for the show?
This whole experience for me when I first did it was kind of like a one time thing. I was like, “I'll try it and see where it goes.” I didn't mind modeling, I wanted to model but it wasn't just a big part of my life. It wasn't like, “This is what I live for, I’ve been trying to do this since I was little.” But as far as acting goes, I used to be signed to an acting agency when I was 15. I only did commercials; I only did small stuff, educational videos and stuff like that. I did plays. So acting has always been a part of me. I've always been interested in it, but I didn't think it would go anywhere, so I thought I'd try modeling and see how that goes and here I am.

Did you think that any of the other girls deserved to go home before you did?

To be honest, I thought maybe Jane would, but apparently her picture was better than mine and that's okay. I did think I was going to stay before Jane.

Going into the competition, did you think your sister Terra would be there with you for the long haul?
I did. To be honest, that was the most shocking week to me. I didn't see that coming. Nobody did. They were all looking around like, “Wow, are they for real? They playing no games. They’re going to send anyone home.” I thought for TV purposes, they're going to have to keep the sisters, they'll have to for ratings. So when Terra got sent home for the bogus reason that she did, I changed my whole outlook on the competition after that. I was like, “I gotta get my A -game on.”

Were you happy that you stayed and she got sent home?
I wasn't happy that she got sent home, but if it had been me that got sent home and she stayed and made it to the top five, I would have been proud of her. I'm just proud that one of us made it that far because we come from the same home and the same mom and my mom's proud. She told us both, “It doesn't matter who wins, I just want both of you all to do your best and go as far as you can.” I wasn't happy that she went home but I'm happy at least I made it this far for the both of us, if that makes sense.

Your impression of Tyra was spot on. Had you practiced it in the house?
No, that was totally impromptu. I thought she was going to be mad when I did that. I was watching just laughing. I can’t believe I did that.

What was your favorite Tyra moment from the show?
It was earlier on when we did the Matthew Rolston shoot and Liz won a challenge, so she took me and Kayla with her to have tea and cake. Tyra came and ate up all the carrot cake. It was a good moment to really see how down to earth she is. She demolished the carrot cake. The carrot cake had no chance. And I’m upset because I didn’t get any carrot cake. She’s not shy.

What else about hanging out with Tyra surprised you?

She talked about our personal looks. We asked her what look do we have and what are you looking for. When we’re posing in these photos we don’t know what we really look like. She was telling Kayla she’s edgy and she could be pretty much anything, she told Liz she had that boyish charm that she had to use to her advantage. She told me I have like a baby face, so high fashion photos it's hard for me. Commercial is more up my alley. She told us how to work our looks. It was something I didn't think I would get Tyra Banks to tell me. She’s one of our judges, but she’s trying to do nothing more than help. That really surprised me; I didn't think she'd tell us something like that.

Was there anything about the filming process that you didn’t expect going into the competition?
The only thing that really annoyed me about the show was those cameras. When they are around you they are around you, you cannot let nothing slide around those cameras. If there's something you don’t want to be seen or shown, you do not say it. Some of those girls did not catch that memo.

Who do you think did not keep their mouth shut on camera?
I’m going to have to say Liz. That’s my buddy, but sometimes she may say something and I’ll be like, “Liz! The cameras are rolling; you don't want to say that on national TV.”

What’s the craziest place you've been recognized since the show aired?
I was in Wal-Mart with my boyfriend and we were buying puppy chow for the dog. This lady's following me down the aisles and she says, “Oh my god! You're Chris from Top Model, aren’t you?,” and I’m like, “no.” then I’m like, “Yeah… that's me.” She was so excited, she hugged me, then she got so excited that she hugged my boyfriend and he was like, “Why you hugging me? I wasn’t on the show!” And she was like, “If you want, I’ll take you home and you can come stay with my family, we’ll order pizza. I’m a Christian, I won’t hurt nobody.” We were like, “Okay, crazy lady, no thank you.” Then she called her daughter, who was so excited she couldn’t even talk, she was just breathing on the phone. That’s probably the craziest one. And then I saw this one lady at Taco Bell, she cried in the window. I was trying to get me a chalupa and she's crying with my chalupa in her hand. I was like, “Stop crying! I’m trying to eat.”

You were very funny when they showed you getting very concerned over Esther’s Kosher diet. Do you think she really kept Kosher during the competition?
The problem that we had with Esther and the whole Kosher thing was the fact that we thought she was lying about it — and when I say we, I mean me and Liz. I never had a problem if that’s her religion and that’s what she wants to do. I’m sitting here thinking, if you only do Kosher and you can only use wooden or plastic forks, and not metal, how come when Karolina Kurkova comes over and cuts up fruit with the knife and she puts in the blender, she'll eat that out of the blender, but when we make food like that she won’t eat it? She’ll be like, “I can’t use that!” and make a huge scene. When this major supermodel comes over you can throw your traditions out the window? So we were like, “You know good and well you’re making up something or you’re lying about something, that's not right. You wouldn’t put your traditions on the line that you’ve been doing for years just for this one celebrity you don’t even know.” Me and Liz always questioned that. I never had a problem with it, I just always thought there was something fishy about that.

What did Esther say when you questioned her?
She beat around the bush about it. That’s fine if you don’t want to answer it. Liz was really the one trying to get it out of her. She really wanted to know.

Have you gotten any offers for acting or comedy gigs yet?
No, ma'am, and I won't know for a while if anyone wants to pick me up for anything, but as far as I know nothing. Not yet. That’s what I mean, not yet.

Do you want to pursue modeling or acting moving forward?
I just want to make something of myself. I don't have to be famous, the biggest star, or have all the money, but I enjoy making people laugh and being in front of the camera. So if I can take that and do something with it, even something small, I don’t have to be the best at what I do, I just want to do it.

Who do you want to win?
Chelsey or Kayla. I’m rooting for those two.

Why not Ann?
Ann doesn't have the complete package to me. Her personality can be dull at times if you don’t know her. I know Ann; I know she has a beautiful soul, but she's nervous and shy around people, whereas Kayla and Chelsey will come out and talk to you and they’re good models at that. So why take this half portion when you can have the whole deal?
