Inside the Abuse: Kim Kardashian’s Ex-Husband

Almost everything about Kim Kardashian's life seems enviable: She's famous, beautiful, stylish, and popular with the menfolk. On top of that, she has a tight-knit family and booming career. (Can you open a gossip rag without seeing at least one snap of the curvaceous star?) Despite appearances, Kim hasn't always lived the proverbial dream. Her first — and only — marriage was far darker than anything typically associated with the Kourtney & Kim Take New York star. According to divorce papers obtained by Access Hollywood, she suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her ex-husband, Damon Thomas.

In January 2000, when she was only 19, Kim married Thomas — a music mogul who produced the Dreamgirls soundtrack and has worked with Babyface. Kim alleges that Thomas jealously isolated her from her family and friends over the course of their four-year marriage: Only two months after their wedding, he asked her to quit her job at a clothing store so that none of her ex-boyfriends would be able to visit her. She also dropped out of college because of him, and Thomas attempted to convince Kim that her sisters and mother were "evil and had bad intentions" toward her.

But the abuse didn't stop there: According to Kim, Thomas began to beat her a few months after they got hitched. One time when the couple was going skydiving with Justin Timberlake, "Damon hit me in the face and cut my lip open," Kim explained in the court papers. She also detailed an instance in which he grabbed her arm and left bruises, and another in which he held her against a wall and choked her.

In 2007, Kim discussed this dysfunctional relationship with" I got married because I clearly was young and it wasn't the best choice. I definitely learned a lot from it and I don't have regrets ever," she explained, glossing over the abuse. "While my friends were at college acting stupid, I was at home learning how to be a wife and running my dad's business, but you know there were problems from the start. I think that I thought things would go away if you got married."

On a positive note, she passed the lessons she learned on to her sisters." It was an insecurity thing that I have definitely learned from," she said to "I'm not that person anymore. So if I could go through it so the people close to me would know what not to do then it was worth it all, because I've learned so much from it." Kourtney, take note!

For his part, Damon Thomas vehemently denies Kim's allegations. In an interview with In Touch Magazine, he ranted, "Kim is obsessed with fame... She can't write or sing or dance, so she does harmful things in order to validate herself in the media. That's a fame-whore to me. It's just not cool at all." Whatever the case, Kim's first marriage was clearly fraught with pain — and we're happy she’s moved on to bigger and better things.
