Meet the Real Woman Who Inspired Sue’s Marriage to Herself on Glee
Think that every marriage involves endless bickering? Not so, if you marry your favorite person in the world: yourself! And you don’t have to be as crazy as Sue Sylvester to attempt such a strange feat. (Of course, if the shoe fits...)
As it turns out, a Taiwanese woman was the real-life inspiration for Sue’s marriage last week on Glee. Chen Wei-yi, age 30, married herself in late October in a ceremony at a hotel in Taipei, which was “witnessed by 30 relatives and friends.” Sounds to us like an easy way to get 30 free gifts!
Chen, an office worker, became an internet sensation after she announced her nuptials a month prior to the happiest day of her life. And she really went all out, spending $5,700 on the ceremony, which included a wedding planner (!) and photographer. If this were us, we would not want evidence of this event, but Chen clearly is not us.
Somewhat shockingly, Chen doesn’t actually sound completelyinsane. She says her marriage shows that she is “confident and upbeat,” and that we “must love ourselves before we can love others.” Chen also says she plans to honeymoon in Australia. We’ve got our fingers crossed that these two can stay together!
