The Vampire Diaries

Wetpaint Exclusive! Michael Trevino Offers an Inside Look at The Vampire Diaries Season 2, Episode 11: “By The Light Of The Moon”

Major change is coming in Episode 2.11, “By the Light of the Moon,” and it’s going to bring a lot of pain, slobber, tears, blood and, yes, snot with it.

At least for Tyler Lockwood.

“It isn’t anything like Twilight or True Blood,” Michael Trevino teases about his alter ego’s long-awaited transformation from teen to teen wolf. “I don’t just morph into this werewolf in an instant. It is a long, painful process.”

That process took two 14 hour days to film. Though, Trevino says, the makeup preparation probably lasted less than 90 minutes, since the show’s makeup artists used very few prosthetics to help him go full wolf. “For the first transformation there were maybe only a couple of prosthetics,” he says. “With us it’s more about the performance than CGI effects and awesome prosthetics — even though we do have them.”

That’s good to hear. In “By the Light of the Moon,” Tyler and his new supernatural BFF Caroline will bond while they buy up half the chains and restraints in town so they can keep his inner dog from going on a killing spree. “He’s locking gates and bringing out chains, trying to barricade himself up so that he won’t hurt anybody,” Trevino says. “Tyler kind of goes into this knowing that when he turns, he’s likely to hurt people. So he wants to make sure that he’s held down because he’s not going to be able to control himself.”

“There are these urges that just go through him during the transformation,” Trevino continues. “Ugh! If it’s not one thing it’s another. [Tyler] can feel [the changes] coming inside of him, and they just happen sporadically. He starts losing his mind.”

But on to the important question: Will he strip? “Omigod you’re not going to get naked are you?” Caroline asks in the preview. That’s what we want to know. But Trevino just won’t say. Although, we’re betting if he doesn’t go full commando, he’s going to come pretty darn close. At least, we sure hope so.

While Tyler’s busy fighting the dog, Bonnie and Luka will make more magic happen, and Elena will struggle to get over the fact that her friends go ride-or-die when it comes to her safety. Meanwhile, Stefan and Katherine will busy themselves matching wits (and possibly bathing-suit-area naughty bits) down in the tomb. A mysterious bombshell will also roll into town looking for her missing friend Mason. So basically, it’s going to be one jam–packed episode — one Trevino’s sure not to miss. “I was really put through the wringer [for this one],” he says. “And I think it’s going to turn out beautifully.”

“By the Light of the Moon,” premieres Thursday, December 9 at 8/7c on The CW. Be sure to check back soon for more from our interview with Michael Trevino!
