How loved is Greg Louganis? So loved that a Facebook group, "Gregory Louganis for DWTS," was launched to get the Olympic gold medal diver on Dancing with the Stars. There are currently more than 3,300 members in the group, which was created by a fan in Boston named Suzanne Prunty.
"This is a group formed (with Greg's blessing) in July 2009 and is the grassroots campaign to have Greg Louganis on Dancing with the Stars!" the group's description states. "From his high school friends who voted him 'Best Dancer' to the rest of the world who know him as the all time greatest Olympian diver, join us and help us by inviting your friends (the more the merrier) and posting on supplied links! Let's get Greg DWTS!"
The group's current aim to get Greg on DWTS Season 12, which airs this spring. Greg, age 50, has said he wants to be on the show and he has the kind of emotional backstory DWTS loves — he's overcome a rough childhood, an abusive relationship, addictions to pills and alcohol, and an HIV diagnosis in 1988.
Greg even wrote to Suzanne before Season 11 with a status update and notes of thanks and encouragement: "Hey Suz, I met with a couple of brothers who are helping with DWTS to get me on, the good news is we didn't get a No so it may be possible for Season 11. We are going to go to a taping of the show to meet the people this next season. We feel if we meet them they may be more supportive to have me on the show. We haven't given up, and what you all have done has really helped. I can't thank you enough, and we haven't given up yet! I haven't been to a Dog Agility Trial where some one comes up to me to ask about DWTS. Still hopeful, Namaste, Greg."
