Top 5 OMG Moments from The Vampire Diaries Season 2, Episode 11: “By the Light of the Moon”

We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Episode 2.11, “By The Light Of The Moon,” was chock full of them. Here are the five scenes that left us with our jaws agape this week.

5. It’s a family affair
There are so many reasons we heart this show. But sometimes it’s just for simple, playful times like these. After Elena learned that her friends had magically locked her inside her own house “for her own good,” she sat on the couch pouting. Damon waltzed in and proceeded to start teasing and updating her on everyone’s whereabouts. Jeremy came downstairs, joined in, and was promptly put on Big Sis Babysitting Duty. “Hey, you know you should get out and enjoy the sun,” Damon teased Elena before he left. “Oh wait, you can’t.” Pissed, E tossed a pillow at him. Jer started to laugh. Then she pushed him onto the floor. Just having a bit of fun at our girl’s expense — the way families do.

4. Beware of dog
Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Minutes after Rose snuck back into the Salvatore’s house to apologize to Stefan for almost letting Elena kill herself, a wolf crashed through the window. Damon grabbed a sword and vamped out of the way. Running Rose — who’s usually a pro at fleeing bad situations — must have been distracted by his hotness (who wouldn’t be?) because she paused one second too long. And the wolf bit her. In the shoulder. Hard. Ouch!

3. Now wait just one minute
Posing as a historian working on a book about Mystic Falls, original vamp Elijah got Aunt Jenna to invite him into the Gilbert house. Heck, when we saw him in the living room, we thought we might pee our pants. Fortunately Elena’s made of stronger stuff. Not only did she keep her cool after running into the vamp, she calmly listened to his proposal then asked him to do her a big solid if he wanted her to play nice. “I need you to do one more thing for me,” she said. Elijah was tickled. “We’re negotiating now?” he asked with a smirk. But you know what? He did what she wanted.

2. It’s that time of the month
“Are you threatening me on a full moon?” Jules asked Damon. “How stupid are you?” Apparently, he’s stupid with a capital S. See, the new woman in town is a true bitch. Literally. Mason’s so-called friend Jules is a she-wolf. And when Alaric and Damon tried to sniff out her Were status she played them like a piano. Until it was time for her to go and make the change. Then she let the eldest Salvatore have it. And not in the way delicious D normally gets the proverbial it. “I sniffed you out the moment you entered this bar — along with your pathetic wolf’s bane,” she barked. “See, I’ve been at this a long time. And any other night of the month the situation would be reversed. But tonight is not the night to pick a fight with me. You’ve been marked.” Damon didn’t even know what to say to that. She silenced the Salvatore.

1. Ch-ch-changes
Even though we knew Tyler Lockwood’s first werewolf transformation was coming in this episode, we didn’t it to be so gut-wrenchingly sad. And we also didn’t think Caroline would step up so sweetly — without a single utterance of vampire snark. Tyler spent the whole night bawling and retching in pain while his bones slowly broke and morphed section by section. “I’m burning up! It hurts!” he sobbed. Caroline was a true BFF if we ever saw one. Even though it scared the bleep out of her, she did her best to not leave left his side. She held him while he sobbed and rubbed his back. She even caressed his misshaped arm at one point. We’re cool with Ty, but this is way more than we could’ve dealt with. But Caroline was a better woman on this night. With her help, Tyler got it through his first transformation murder free. “You didn’t get out. You’re okay,” Caroline said when she found Ty huddled naked in human form. “No I’m not,” Tyler replied. Then — and this broke us — the werewolf started weeping like a baby while the vampire rocked him in her arms. Not that’s a moment!
