Chris Harrison: This Season Will Be “Old School” Bachelor
ABC didn't choose Brad Womack to be the Season 15 Bachelor — Brad Womack begged to come back for a second beating. "He had been kind of pursuing us," Bachelor host Chris Harrison told Zap2It, "and we were kinda 'Eh, I don't think it'd be a great idea,' then late spring/early summer we started talking about this and the more we bantered it about, the more we thought this might be a great idea. A great way to break the chain of just having a favorite person from the previous season. He showed us he was different and really wanted to redeem himself."
"It's a great season and very much an old school Bachelor, but in a way it's completely different than any season we've ever had," Chris said. "In a way it's old school because there's really no huge controversy a la Rozlyn or Justin Rego. None of the crazy side-track stuff. But it's completely different because you have a Bachelor who isn't exactly a hero. Our Bachelors and Bachelorettes are always kind of loved by the country and there's a lot of animosity and skepticism built in with this guy. Everyone's kind of like, 'Alright dude, you better prove that you deserve this.'"
To be fair, the Bachelors and Bachelorettes never get out of the show unscathed. Jake Pavelka was liked on Jillian Harris's season of The Bachelorette, but a lot of people hated the idea of him as the Bachelor — and some might say he lived up to their dread. Ali Fedotowsky showed her, uh, witchy side with Vienna Girardi on Jake's season, and a lot of people didn't want her to be Season 6's Bachelorette. Even sweet Jillian Harris was taken to task for choosing Ed Swiderski over good-hearted hotties Kiptyn Locke and Reid Rosenthal.
In the end, the people we ultimately end up rooting for are the 25 or 30 men and women who want to win the crazy Bachelor/ette's heart. "You're also going to find that the stories of a lot of these girls are very different," Chris said of Brad's crop of potential brides. "Whether it's divorced moms or Emily, who lost her fiancee. There are stories that are unbelievably compelling and unlike anything we've dealt with on the show. You don't have quote-unquote craziness, but you have storylines that will captivate our audience unlike any other."
Great! But one thing to keep in mind: Although "old school" seasons of The Bachelor have had happy endings with little drama, they have also resulted in couples who broke up shortly after the show aired. Hopefully Season 15 won't be "old school" like that!
