Wilson Cruz Says He’ll Have to Pop a Xanax to Watch His Grey’s Anatomy Appearance Tonight
What's better than a Latino man in a kilt guest starring on Grey's Anatomy? A gay Latino man in a kilt played by Wilson Cruz. The My So-Called Life actor guest stars in tonight's episode as a man whose partner has been hospitalized on their wedding day. In one emotional scene with Callie, he explains his getup by telling her that he just wanted to have the same "big day" everyone else gets (in Washington, gay couples can only enter a domestic partnership, not get married).
"I thought it was so perfectly written and I wanted to do it justice," says Cruz of his role. "I'm eager to see if I did. I'm going to have to take a Xanax or something while I watch."
So how did Cruz land the big part? Through a bestie-ship with Sara Ramirez, of course. The two had been friends for 10 years before Cruz and Shonda Rhimes ran into each another at one of Sara's birthday parties.
"Shonda was a big fan of My So-Called Life and my work afterwards, which is very flattering," he says. "And then we were at Sara Ramirez's most recent birthday and she said to me, 'We're going to work together someday.'"
Most of Cruz's character's scenes are with Dr. Torres, so what was it like working with one of his best friends? "She's fantastic," he gushes. "And I just feel like as a gay Latino man, to see her play this lesbian Latina woman on a major network television show and do it with such grace, I couldn't be more proud to know her."
Since Shonda seems to be such a fan of his work, might we have a recurring role to look forward to? "I don't think it's going to happen, but I don't think it'll be the last time I'm going to work with Shonda or Sara. So, we will see."
Um, honeymoon in LA/Private Practice crossover anyone?
Get your box of tissues out for this one, folks. It looks like it's going to be a tear-jerker.
