A couple of American Idol alums — Season 9’s Didi Benami and Season 7’s Michael Johns — had some kind words to say about the Idol premiere. Both Benami and Johns liked Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, and expressed admiration for the judges for not bringing Simon-intense levels of harshness to the judging table. Ha, they’re probably just a little jeal-y of Season 10 alums and wish Simon had left way sooner, like, for instance before they got there!
"[J.Lo] did great. Some people have no idea how incredibly terrifying [auditioning] is,” said Benami, who is currently working on an album. “I love that the judges responded in a more kind, fun-loving way. In my heart, I feel we should really be advocating this kind of treatment as opposed to snarky mean jabs that can rip your heart out." But we love the snark!
"I think she just didn't realize how hard it is to break someone's heart," Johns said of J.Lo. “Ellen experienced that too." Johns also expressed his affection for veteran judge Randy Jackson, "We are finally getting to see the true Randy. He's so knowledgeable and funny, and we are seeing that now." Awww, talking up His Dawg-ness… We totally agree, Michael!
But it’s nice to hear about Idol alums praising the post-Simon, “remix” crew. If anyone knows what they’re talking about, it’s those who have actually faced that judging table and come through the other side!
