Reality Check for Gossip Girl Season 4, Episode 13: “Damien Darko”
Gossip Girl was a veritable house of mirrors this week — full of fake internships at a real fashion mag and famous people guest starring as themselves... or fake versions of themselves. Come, take our hand and we’ll guide you through it.
Real: Lorrie Moore. Moore is a fancy-shmancy literary author, albeit one who runs in more of a New Yorker crowd than a W one. We suspect she doesn’t even own a TV, let alone watch Gossip Girl, so it’s no surprise she was mentioned but never seen.
Fake: Jeremiah Harris. But! He’s played by real-life fancy-shmancy author Jay McInerney. Fantasy wrapped in reality wrapped in an enigma — that’s Gossip Girl!
Real: Stefano Tonchi. Yes, that really was the W editor who stepped over Dan and Blair. Lately it seems that every magazine has to make an appearance in a TV show, and W has no desire to get left behind.
Fake: Epperly Lawrence. Stefano’s assistant is played by actress Caitlin Fitzgerald. No real assistant worth her salt would have time to play herself. Stefano’s real assistant probably didn’t even have time to watch the episode.
Real: Dan gets his internship through his connection to Lily. Because yes, getting one’s foot in the door in the ever-shrinking magazine world is impossible. That’s why you should write for blogs instead.
Fake: Blair says, “My mother is a designer. She can’t call in favors from fashion magazines.” Excuse us? This isn’t the House of Representatives. There’s no fashion industry code of conduct. And if there were, wouldn’t “Thou shalt shmooze and trade favors” be part of it?
