Fantasia Boycotted Grammys Over Aretha Franklin Tribute Snub
As the one of only three American Idol alums represented among Grammy nominees last Sunday night, Fantasia’s absence at the awards ceremony was quite conspicuous. Fantasia ended up winning her first Grammy.
But why was Fantasia unable to be at the Staples Center to personally nab herself a statuette? Turns out Fantasia’s absence was a boycott for not being asked to participate in the Aretha Franklin tribute that kicked the show off, and which featured a quintet of notable pop divas, among them Idol’s Jennifer Hudson.
Said Fantasia, "They were honoring someone who is my idol, Aretha Franklin, and there is no way I could have sat there and not got the happy feet and wanting to jump on the mic because she is my favorite, so I felt like, you know, at the end of the day I should have been on that stage, so, I kind of did my own little thing last night."
Hm, we understand both sides of this story. We get why Grammy night producers didn’t ask Fantasia to participate in the Franklin tribute — Girlfriend’s had herself quite a bit of bad press these days. But we also get why Fantasia could be a little miffed since J-Hud was asked, and she wasn’t even a nominee this year.
