ANTM’s Whitney Thompson Used to Run Until She Literally Vomited
Whitney Thompson, winner of Cycle 10 and ANTM's first plus-size (or "fiercely real," as Tyra puts it) winner ever is a real role model for young girls. Contrary to model stereotypes, Whit is now a spokeswoman to raise awareness about healthy self-esteem and eating habits and has been visiting colleges to speak about her experience with weight issues.
She's been modeling since the age of 15, and took home the title of America's Next Top Model, but, at some point, she decided, "eating half an apple for breakfast and having a half a can of tuna for lunch" wasn't healthy. "Running until literally vomiting" was often the result, and, finally, Whit was over it.
She admits the only reason she even tried out for Top Model was to prove that curves were sexy (a girl after Tyra's own heart), after her 13-year-old cousin complained that she thought she was fat (despite being a size 2). Of course, she called out the fashion industry itself for hiring stick-thin pre-pubescent girls who haven't developed yet, and using them as the standard of beauty. That, coupled with airbrushing in magazines, and, Whitney says, looking like a model in real life, is virtually impossible.
Whit's advice? "Walk away from the mirror...try to take the negative and make it into the positive." Sounds like Tyra's parting words to many models on the show...
