Andre Leon Talley Chooses Best and Worst Dressed at 2011 Oscars
It was the best of nudes; it was the worst of nudes... at the Oscars this year. Throw in a couple of red showstoppers, and one tangerine mess, and you've run the gamut of Andre Leon Talley's 83rd Annual Oscars fashion roundup. Let's start with the best, shall we?
Two of Talley's fave Oscar looks were True Grit nominee, Hailee Steinfeld's age-appropriate gown and Blue Valentine nominee Michelle Williams' effortless Chanel column. Hailee was cute as can be in a tea-length, nude Marchesa ball gown that neither looked overdone for a 14-year-old's maiden Oscar voyage, nor like she was headed to the prom. Complete the look with a diamond and platinum Fred Leighton headband plus ballerina bun, and you get one of ALT's "youthful, graceful, and age-correct" BDLs (best dressed ladies) of the night. The other BDL was Michelle Williams in a beaded white Channel column dress, which set off by her platinum pixie 'do and dark eyebrows, was totally stunning.
As for the drekitude? Oy. No surprise that Andre hated Jennifer Hudson's tangerine, deep V, Versace halter dress with train bearer. Yeah, we didn't realize we were at a '90s wedding, either. Nicole Kidman's distinct style elements thrown together didn't win ALT over either. Her white, structural Dior Couture column, with kimono elements, red peep toe sandals, and "tennis-match ponytail," for Talley, "suggested randomness or that she is too cool to care," neither of which worked for him.
We agree with him on all of the above, but have a bone to pick with him hating on Mila Kunis' sexy lavender gown. He called it "overdrive," but we thought the hints of skin and cleavage through lace were subtle and sassy, just like Mila.
