Recap of Bones Season 6, Episode 15, “The Killer in the Crosshairs”: Snipers, Shrinks, and Staccato Mamba
Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) has a heart-to-heart with Angela’s dad about what they’re going to name the baby. His vote is for Catherine Temperance if it’s a girl or Michael Joseph if it’s a boy. Angela’s dad’s opinion? Staccato Mamba for either.
Angela gathers Brennan, Cam (Tamara Taylor), and Cam’s new cute haircut together to give them the news about the “smart bullet” found in the dead deer at the cabin. Apparently it had some sort of a microchip in it that can be programmed to detonate at a certain distance. It leads her to believe that Broadsky’s next victim is going to demand a difficult shot. Since Broadsky isn’t skilled enough to create such a bullet, Booth comes up with someone who is.
Caroline and Booth have a chat with a weaponry master Booth knows from back in the day, but the guy just wants to talk about old times, not new information. That is until Booth grabs him by the collar and Caroline gets sassy. Their bad cop/bad DA act works, and the guy spills the specifications Broadsky provided for the bullet. Another interesting tidbit of news? Broadsky wanted the bullet today.
Angela puts all the information about the space the bullet’s been designed for into the computer, and Caroline remarks that the dimensions could describe the women’s bathroom at the federal courthouse. We’re just going to chalk that up to her being a prosecutor and spending a lot of time there. Otherwise we’re getting into TMI territory.
The two rehash the incident over drinks at the Founding Fathers. Brennan tells Booth, “I’m standing right beside you, Booth. Like always. Like I always will.”
The touching remark reminds us a lot of what someone would say to their partner on their wedding day. But Brennan has to kill the moment with her awkwardness, adding, “I am being metaphorical, of course because we are sitting.”
Unlike Hodgins. He ends the episode slumped over in some back alley trying to shake off the fuzzy memory of what Angela’s dad tells him were one too many shots of tequila. They were celebrating Hodgins getting the approval to call the baby whatever “boring, unoriginal” name he and Angela want.
He may be able to sleep off his hangover, but he won’t be able to erase the image of his father-in-law tattooed on his upper arm. Good luck, Hodgins. And good luck to us: Can we survive until next week now that we’ve seen the heart-stopping preview for “The Blackout in the Blizzard”?
Staccato Mamba, Staccato Mamba. Seriously, how much fun is that to say? It’s almost as entertaining as last night’s episode of Bones, “The Killer in the Crosshairs.”
After the long three-week wait, the payoff comes within the first couple minutes: We’re treated to Booth (David Boreanaz) out on a jog, lookin’ all hot and sweaty. He runs right into Brennan (Emily Deschanel), who is also able to appreciate the gift of his sexiness. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
They show up at the crime scene a little red in the face and sporting clothes you typically throw on when you’re in a hurry. Surprisingly, no one asks them what they’ve been up to. Guess we’re the only ones with our minds in the gutter. (That dream may finally come true in next week’s episode.)
We watch the victim die, so we know the Gravedigger’s killer, Jacob Broadsky, is behind the single shot to the spine. In sniper-speak, that’s called “disconnecting the computer.”
The victim, Walter Crane, has ID on him — which is a good thing. By the time Caroline and crew show up to investigate, the rats have eaten his face. (Thanks, Bones, for out-grossing yourself yet again!) The culprit is equally easy to identify: Between the handmade bullet and the difficulty of the shot, Booth knows who’s responsible.
B&B head over to the rooftop where the sniper will likely set up for his shot. But when they can’t spot Broadsky, or his rifle, Brennan realizes that the men’s bathroom is probably identical to the women’s and they’ve been staking out the wrong place. As luck would have it, Caroline, who is monitoring the courthouse bathrooms, spots a crooked cop (who is there on trial) heading into the men’s bathroom.
Booth enlists Brennan to be his spotter, even though she admits she’s not trained for this sort of thing. Booth silences her with one of his off-the-cuff, too-cute compliments: “For God’s sake, you’re brilliant Bones!”
With the two in-denial lovebirds side-by-side, Booth can only see Broadsky’s exposed weapon. He fires at it, disarming the gun but missing the sniper — who will go on to live another day, and presumably kill another bad guy.
Back at the Jeffersonian, Angela’s (Michaela Conlin) dad stops by, because he wants to name her first-born child. More on that later.
Angela’s baby daddy, on the other hand, is hard at work. He discovers that the money found at the scene of the crime is counterfeit, meaning Broadsky’s latest victim was another criminal on the loose.
Even though Booth and Broadsky are both paid to take lives, which Brennan oh-so-helpfully points out, Booth is determined to prove they are nothing alike. He tracks the sniper to a remote cabin where he’d been using the grounds — and the wildlife — for target practice.
Not long after, Broadsky sets his sights on Booth, appearing in his apartment and threatening to leave Booth’s son fatherless unless the Special Agent (of hotness) pulls back his investigation. Although Broadsky departs without a confrontation, he remains in Booth’s head the following day.
Seeley tells Sweets (John Francis Daley) that it bugs him that Bones sees him in the same way she sees Broadsky. When Sweets suggests he open up to Brennan, Booth takes offense, saying, “We don’t go there anymore. That’s over.” Which we all know is not true.
