Emily Finds a Key From Alison! Pretty Little Liars: Season 1, Episode 21
This week’s crazy episode of Pretty Little Liars (March 14, 2011, "Monsters in the End") involved new secrets about Ian and Melissa, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn)’s departure from Rosewood — possibly for good! — and a mysterious key that added all kinds of new drama. But no one should be surprised that this show finds a way to add new drama.
As the episode begins, entitled “Monsters in the End,” the whole town is preparing for the Founder’s Festival. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is still in shock about the sweater fibers that the police found in her room last week, so Hanna (Ashley Benson) agrees to get info from Caleb. And Spencer’s mom tells her to avoid spending time with Toby, so people don’t get suspicious of her.
Paige gets concert tickets for herself and Emily, which sounds great... until Em realizes that some dude named Troy is coming along, too, to help fool Paige’s dad into thinking she's straight. Suddenly, things no longer sounds so great! But Paige promises to come out after speaking to someone from Sheridan Prep’s pride group.
Caleb tells Hanna that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) was looking for a key that she was certain that the girls’ had. Later, we see him apologize to Hanna’s mom, who forgives him, and then he gives Mona a note to give Hanna, which says “I love you.” But Mona tears up the note before Hanna can read it! Mona is clearly the worst friend ever.
Aria goes snooping around on Ezra’s Facebook "website page" — sounds like they have a healthy relationship! — and finds that he has a friend named Jackie, who has a picture up of her wearing an engagement ring posing with Ezra in Italy. Hanna convinces Aria to create a fake profile and friend this mystery woman to learn more.
Spencer goes with Melissa and Ian to meet with Mrs. Ackard about a festival booth. Suddenly, Hilton Head comes up, and Spencer mentions that Ian knows all about it. So when Mrs. Acker questions him about places to stay, Ian and Melissa give erroneous info about the hotel, and Spencer realizes that Melissa might be lying about having been there!
Emily ends up meeting with Samara, from Sheridan’s pride group, but Paige never shows up, so Emily and Samara start to bond. They meet up later at the festival and Samara gives Emily some earrings, which she loves. Paige finally arrives in a huff, so Emily breaks things off with her — again!
Back home, Emily gets a text from “A” about how she has a type, so Emily reminisces about how Ali gave her a snow globe as a gift, which Emily still has. As Em examines the snow globe, a key from a storage unit falls out of the bottom. Could this be the infamous key?
Aria confronts Ezra about Jackie, and he explains that they dated in college and he proposed, but she broke it off before they got hitched. Aria has to leave when Em texts about the key, and as she does, police officer Garrett — who has been following the girls all episode — watches her walk away and invites himself into Ezra’s apartment. Things aren’t looking good for Ezria!
Aria gets to the festival, where she and Hanna watch Caleb depart for Arizona. Tragic! And Spencer gets an ominous text from Toby, saying he’s using someone else’s phone, and that she should just go in the fun house. But when Spencer gets in, she sees a spray-painted message from “A” to “shut up,” and then someone locks Spencer in there!
Finally, Ian lets Spencer loose after he coincidentally shows up holding a crow bar, which he claims was keeping her stuck. (Could this guy possibly be any more suspicious? We think not!) And Spencer receives a message from Toby’s phone, meaning the last one from him was probably a fake. She spots Toby, and even with her mom watching, Spencer runs over and kisses him. Mom’s not gonna like that!
Finally, the girls use the key on the storage unit and find Alison’s old lunchbox. In it is a flash drive that mysteriously contains footage of the girls with Alison — even on the day she disappeared — taken by someone who was stalking them. The girls surmise that Ali was killed because whoever was taking that footage realized that Ali knew about it.
So the episode was packed with surprises, but we hope the show finds a way to bring Caleb back. Not only did we love seeing him together with Hanna, but we just plain loved seeing him — especially without a shirt on!
