Jennifer Lopez on the Latin Music Industry: “It’s Okay to Be Out”
Here’s one more item to add to the ever-growing list of awesome things about American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez: She supports the LGBTQ community to be who they are, no matter what.
The pop singer interviewed with out and fabulous Latin blogger Andres Duque, who called her a “longtime ally of the gay community.” Jennifer said, “I just think... it’s okay to be ‘out.’ I do think it’s acceptable for people to be who they are. I am a huge advocate of that…”
J.Lo cited Latin pop star Ricky Martin, who came out last year, as well as members of her own family for her openness on the subject. Said J.Lo, “I had an aunt who was gay. I grew up with it. It’s just to me, being around dancers my whole life, you know? There’s a lot of dancers as well who are gay and it’s just not… For me it was never even anything as an issue. I had uncles… It was just seeing people were people.”
Of course, gay people in the entertainment industry is nothing new. But such public support by A-list talent has not always been the rule. We think Jen counting herself among those who support the gay community is pretty awesome.
