American Idol

Jacob Lusk and Paul McDonald Talk Song Choice

Any contestant of American Idol will tell you, song choice can make or break a performance. Doesn’t matter if you sing like an angel, if you misinterpret a classic song, you’re gonna get a negative response — see last night’s lukewarm judging of Lauren Alaina’s so-so version of the classic, “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman.” Lauren is undoubtedly an amazing singer but bit off more than she could chew by taking on the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. That is not a comparison you want to encourage, Alaina!

Slightly more inspired were the song choices of two other Idol Season 10 finalists from last night – Jacob Lusk and Paul McDonald.

Jacob stuck to his guns by insisting on singing Michael Jackson’s “Man In the Mirror” rather than Marvin Gaye’s classic, “Let’s Get It On.” The singer said “With the original song choice, I just thought it was too raunchy. I'm an artist. I have songs that are sexual, but to just say, "Let's do it! Let's just get it crackin’ baby, arrrrr!" is not the message that I really want to tell the world.” Arrrr? Is “Let’s Get It On” about an amorous pirate?

Paul apparently filed through a huge stack of songs before landing on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” “I took in a handful [to Jimmy Iovine and Will.I.Am] and they were just like, 'Yeah, that sounds like crap,' and I was like, 'Awesome.' So I kept going up and down, learning different songs and we ended up sticking with a Johnny Cash kind of country thing. But it was tough, man.”

Song choice isn't easy, but at least no one went with Usher's "OMG" this week.

Yeah, we sympathize, Paul. Pleasing Jimmy and Will.I.Am would be pretty tough. Hmm, maybe we should adopt Will.I.Am’s penchant for contractions, and dub them, “Jimm.I.Am.” But that’s not grammatical... “Jimm.We.Are?” Never Mind.
