5 Reasons Scotty McCreery Will Win American Idol

He tops our Power Ranking every week, the judges love him (well, the judges love everyone, but nonetheless), he’s hugely popular on Twitter, and he frankly just seems unstoppable. Here are five reasons why we think Scotty McCreery will win this season of American Idol.

He has an obvious musical genre, and it’s one that people love. Country music has always been (and will always be) hugely popular in the United States — the two top-selling solo artists in U.S. history are Scotty’s childhood idol Elvis Presley, who got his start in country music, and contemporary country musician Garth Brooks. Also, Idol audiences have a history of embracing country singers, including Josh Gracin, Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington, and a nice girl from Oklahoma — you may have heard of her — named Carrie Underwood.

He’s actually a fantastic singer. Okay, we know that ultimately, American Idol’s a popularity contest. However, actual vocal talent is worthy of consideration. While the best singer doesn’t always win, when it’s time for the finale, there’s just something about a contestant who’s really got the pipes. Everything else aside, Scotty has a terrific voice, and a distinctive one.

He’s got the teens and tweens on his side. That’s not to say that Scotty doesn’t have fans across a range of ages, but we’ve seen all those young girls in the Idol audience brandishing Scotty posters. He’s a huge hit with the young ladies, which is key for success. Not only is Idol a popularity contest and a singing contest, it’s also a voting contest, and nobody votes for an AI contestant like a lovestruck, text-savvy 14-year-old girl.

He comes across extremely well on television. Never underestimate the value of being just plain likable. Scotty endears himself to audiences with his poise and sense of humor, which is made all the more impressive by his youth. Some incredibly talented contestants have come across as cold or boring or snobby, and its been their undoing. Scotty will never have that problem.

He’s a Southern boy. Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin... we could go on and on. For whatever reason, Southern contestants have historically done well on AI. The past few seasons, the trend has been slightly more toward the Midwest, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the South make a comeback this year.
