Hines Ward Misses Son as DWTS Takes Up Entire Off Season
Hines Ward isn’t the only parent competing on Dancing With the Stars Season 12 — in fact, Chelsea Kane and Romeo Miller are the only celebs in the top seven without kids. But when he’s not busy with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Hines likes to spend time with his 7-year-old son, Jaden, who lives in Georgia; losing this precious time with his son is not something he expected from DWTS.
"I really didn't know what all it entailed of me being out here — putting in seven hours a day, six days a week and not being able to see [my son] like I want to," Hines told Entertainment Tonight. "Because our off season's so short this dance competition's taking up my whole off season. So, I'm sacrificing that but at the long haul, if we can walk away with the mirror ball trophy, it'll be all worth it."
Hines is still considered a front-runner to win, even if Romeo & Chelsea beat him to the first 10s of the season.
Hines told ET he felt like an outsider when he was Jaden’s age and that’s what led him to start the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, which is dedicated to ending discrimination against biracial children all over the world.
"It was really hard for me to blend in," Hines said. "The white kids really didn't want to hang out with me because I was black. The Korean kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was black. The black kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was Korean so I had a hard time struggling, trying to fit in with the certain groups until I got involved with sports."
Poor Hines! We hope little Jaden doesn’t have to go through anything similar. Maybe he can come visit the DWTS set on spring vacation. Parents shouldn’t be the only ones allowed to have fun out there!
