Dancing With The Stars

Cheryl Burke: Judge Bruno Was Mean to Chris Jericho

Wrestler Chris Jericho seems to be taking his Dancing With the Stars elimination in stride, but his pro partner Cheryl Burke is a bit miffed about what happened the night before they were sent home.

On Season 12 Week 6’s Guilty Pleasures Performance Show, judge Bruno Tonioli really let loose on Chris’s not-so-hot Tango. Nobody seemed to think the dance was spectacular — including Chris — but Bruno called the dance cold, uneventful, and lumpy, saying Chris went for a rock theme but turned into a lump of granite. Bruno also did a mocking impression of Chris’s stone face on the dance floor. It came off as more mean-spirited than, say, Chris’s own impression of British judge Len Goodman.

“The judges were harsh,” Chris told Entertainment Weekly. But he wasn’t as upset about it as Cheryl.

“It’s turning more into the judges' show than an actual dancing show,” Cheryl said. “I think sometimes the judges can be a little harsh. Bruno was mean to Chris. There was nothing that he could take from what Bruno said. There was nothing positive and nothing for him to work on if he were to make it to next week. I hope this doesn’t turn into a mean show.”

Every so often it does seem like the judges go too far with their criticism. Carrie Ann Inaba was accused of making Kendra Wilkinson feel like trash after her “elegance” comment a couple of weeks ago, but that was nothing. Remember last season when Bruno called Michael Bolton’s doghouse dance “the worst Jive in 11 seasons,” adding that Rin Tin Tin could’ve done a better job? Michael did not like that one bit, telling Brooke Burke that Bruno was “inappropriate and disrespectful.” Len was no kinder, saying Bolton’s dance "needed a poop scooper as well just to finish it off."

Usually the judges reserve their harshest words for the pros — like when Len shouted at Maks and Derek Hough when he didn’t like their choreography or when Carrie Ann tried to spank Maks for spanking Brady — but Bruno, in particular, doesn’t know when to hold back. He can’t really help himself. He had a field day with Kate Gosselin on Season 10, comparing her to a shopping cart, a coat hanger, and a “Superbitch from Hell” with “a face like thunder.” And the “Superbitch” comment was his compliment!

What do you think? Are the judges getting too mean? Have they always been mean? Do you like their zany zingers?
