Darren Criss’s Starship Soundtrack Blasts to Top of iTunes Charts

Remember a few months ago when we told you Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) managed to write the soundtrack for an entire musical in his free time? Well, his soundtrack debuted on iTunes on Saturday, April 30 — and it spent much of the weekend as the #5 album!

Written and performed by StarKid, the theater production company Darren started with some friends back in college, Starship is a sci-fi space musical that the group performed live in Chicago back in February, though its taped version was only released on YouTube this Saturday night.

The musical stars Darren’s college friend, Joey Richter — pictured with Darren, left — as an alien bug who wants to become human. Still a bit confused? It’s sort of like The Little Mermaid meets Starship Troopers, but with a lot of colorful puppets thrown in.

While that idea may sound a bit strange, Starship is already doing quite well for itself. With a devoted fan base from previous shows like A Very Potter Musical in 2009 and A Very Potter Sequel in 2010, the musical is well on it’s way to becoming another viral YouTube hit — gaining over 500,000 views in just the first 24 hours after its Saturday night release.

Ready to kiss the planet goodbye and blast off into outer space? Check out Darren’s songwriting skills by watching Act 1, Scene 1 of Starship here. But make sure you’re ready for zany plots and lots of colorful space-bug puppets!
