The Vampire Diaries

Exclusive Interview! Zach Roerig on Matt’s Future With Caroline

The cast of The Vampire Diaries are just as freaked out about Aunt Jenna and Uncle John’s shocking deaths last night as any fan of the CW hit. In an exclusive Wetpaint interview, Zach Roerig, who plays unlucky nice guy Matt Donovan, tells us how the TVD gang felt about the latest departures, puts the kibosh on rekindling a not-so-old flame, and hints that Matt may get into local politics on Season 3.

How did the cast react to the deaths of Jenna (Sara Canning) and John (David Anders)?
We were all very bummed. Very, very bummed. Sara Canning, you know, I love her like a sister. She’s an amazing girl. I created a very good bond with her, as we all did when we shot the pilot in Vancouver. We’re definitely going to miss her. We had an absolutely good time, all the time.

Is there any hope for Matt and Caroline (Candice Accola) getting back together?
In the near future, no.

How do you think Matt will react if Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Caroline get together?
It’s definitely going to be hard for him to swallow, but I think ultimately Matt will be understanding. He cares deeply for his friend—his friend just lost his father. Also, in the case of Caroline he’d want someone to be there for her. So I think Matt would step back and allow Tyler to fulfill that need for her.

What would you have chosen: to have a “normal” life, or to be with Caroline even though she’s a vampire?
I probably would have walked away. I mean, I’m not saying that I would’ve stayed away forever. I don’t think Matt necessarily will stay away forever, but I think he really needs to take some time to process the whole thing.

Do you think Matt still holds a torch for Elena (Nina Dobrev)?
Yes, yes, yes. I think he definitely does and I think he always will. He always will be there for her whenever she needs him.

Are you tired of bad things happening to Matt?
Well, sort of, but I don’t know what it would be like if something good happened to him either. I actually don’t really mind that bad things happen to Matt. At least it’s something for him to do.

Where do you want to see Matt in Season 3?
I’d like to see Matt become more involved [with] the town Council. Matt could take on some responsibility.

Any little tidbits you can offer about what’s going down in the finale?
I’m not really sure what I can actually say. The fans will be blown away. I mean, that’s not cocky or anything. They’re definitely going to be blown away. If it’s possible to be blown away by a TV show, our writers are the ones who can do it.

What are you doing on your summer vacation?
Right now I’m actually in Ohio. I’m doing some renovations on my barn. We have a family farm and we just planted 2,200 trees yesterday. I’m going to go London for a little while and I’ll probably go to California to do some surfing.

Lighting round: You’ve got one word to describe each of these people. Go!

Ian Somerhalder: Benevolent
Paul Wesley: Stern
Matt Davis: Eccentric
Candice Accola: Glitter
Joseph Morgan: Polite
Daniel Gillies: Hilarious
Kat Graham: Thirsty
Sara Canning: Passionate
