The Vampire Diaries

Have Your Say: Did John Gilbert Redeem Himself?

The five stages of Uncle John:

1. Mistrust: In which we’re not sure why he’s shown up on the Gilbert’s doorstep.
2. Disbelief: When he reveals himself to be Elena’s real father.
3. Loathing: After he casually murders Pearl, tries to trick Damon into killing himself by staking Elijah, and takes his supernatural jewelry back from Alaric.
4. Bargaining: Caused by his post-Isobel’s-sun-suicide pleas to Elena that he wants to help her survive.
5. Acceptance: The man sacrifices himself for his daughter.

Now that he’s gone, we kinda sorta feel bad for the guy. Sure, he was a vamp hater, but he was totally ready to except Elena as she was: bloodsucker or not. Is it just us, or did his deed, and his note, redeem him in some way?
