Uh, when is Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries starting? Okay, we have all summer to re-watch all 22 episodes from the epic Season 2, but for now, we just want to revel in those times when the perfect scene and the perfect song aligned in music mastery. Did your favorite make the list?
5. Tyler leaves Mystic Falls
Artist: Matthew West Song: “Family Tree”
Okay, we could NOT stop re-watching the scene where Tyler wraps his business in Mystic Falls before going on his werewolf spirit journey or whatever it was to Florida. And not just because he gave his bro Matt some good advice, thoughtfully left a note and flowers for his mom, and managed to make watching the girl he’s crushing on through the window not at all creepy. Yup, the song overlaying these heartstring-tugging moments totally had us tearing up. You go, Matthew West.
12. Katherine and Stefan dance at the Masquerade Ball
Back when we were only just beginning to realize how bad Katherine can be, she showed up masked and ready to play at the ball. Stefan indulged her with a dance, and some sexy, snarky sparks were flying, all to the tune of a luscious, slowed-down cover of “Head Over Heels.” And then Aimee makes the mistake of confusing Katherine for Elena, and, well, her murder pretty much kills the mood.
Damon’s drinking himself into an existential crisis in the middle of the road. When “DLZ” kicks in, we feel that shift in his character, from ponderous to dangerous. Thank you, TV on the Radio, for creating a track that, when put in this context, made us fear for the safety of every motorist in Mystic Falls.
Two supernatural beings, alone in the world. But it doesn’t have to be that way. And then, just when Tyler and Caroline are actually connecting, Matt shows up. Joel & Luke makes the transitions from sweet to awkward and back again effortlessly.
2. Damon tells Elena he loves her, then compels her to forget
This might very well be our favorite moment in all of Season 2, and the accompaniment to Damon finally, finally telling Elena how he feels about her needed to both swell and fade at the perfect interludes. What can we say? This song was just the right choice to back his “I don’t deserve you, but my brother does” speech. Sa-woon.
10. Elena and Stefan go for a moonlit Ferris wheel ride
Ah, normal teenager-dom. Fighting off evil ex-girlfriends, finding out our uncle is your father, flying to the top of an amusement park ride after hours. This is as mundane as things get when your BF is a vampire, but it’s still pretty sweet, much like One Republic’s soundtrack to the perfect (supernatural) date.
Is this a Delena-heavy mix of music moments? Yes. But the pair have an undeniable chemistry that’s been building for the past two years, and the pair’s first really real kiss broke the dizzying tension like Damon’s fever after he downed Klaus’ blood. Okay, it was sweaty — and not in the good way — and on the verge of Damon’s death bed, but it was still a huge deal. And with Levi Kreis’ “I Should Go” playing under some sweet declarations of affection, it was pure magic.
Talk about grand romantic gestures! It takes a serious set of fangs for a vampire to jump on stage, compel a band, and dedicate a Bangles song to your erstwhile BF. The fact that Matt totally falls for it makes the act all the better.
8. Elena reads Uncle John’s goodbye letter/Jenna’s funeral
This wrecked us. Okay, we’re actually getting a little teary just remembering it. Jenna’s funeral and John’s disembodied voice reading his letter to Elena overlayed with Birdy’s cover of the Bon Iver song “Skinny Love” has to be one of TVD’s saddest moments ever. And this was back when we still thought Damon’s life was in danger.
Just when you think Katherine has been a vamp so long she’s no longer human, she runs back to Stefan’s lifeless body and proclaims, “I love you, Stefan. We will be together again. I promise.” Sincere much? And Sara Bareilles serenading this genuinely ah-mazing moment with “Breathe Again”? Genius.
Even if you’re Team Delena, we know you couldn’t help but get chills when Elena tells Stefan, “I’ve been so selfish because I love you so much. And I know how much you love me. But it’s over.” And as much as we are right there with teary Stefan, we love replaying this song over and over because Athlete has written such an amazing breakup song.
