Friend Explains How Death of First Love Affected Ashley Hebert on The Bachelor
We've been wondering about Ashley Hebert’s lost love ever since Reality Steve mentioned it in his spoilers before The Bachelor Season 15 even began. Ashley never discussed her ex-boyfriend, Joe Olszewski, while on The Bachelor — or viewers weren't shown anything — but In Touch has details on how his death on September 2, 2010, had her second-guessing herself.
According to Hollywood Life, Joe was a year ahead of Ashley at the University of Maine and they started dating after she graduated in 2006. They reportedly kept in touch after they broke up, even though he lived in California and she was studying to be a dentist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Right before Ashley started filming The Bachelor she found out that Joe had died, due to complications from pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
“She was really beside herself,” Ashley’s friend Mike King tells In Touch (via Hollywood Life). “She kept wondering how things could have gone differently.”
Mike also tells In Touch that while Ashley was with Brad, she was still grieving for Joe. “She was asking herself questions, thinking that if she’d stayed with Joe, he wouldn’t have ended up in California, and maybe wouldn’t have developed the condition.”
Honestly, this kind of heartbreak and tragedy is just the thing we would've expected Ashley to talk about on Brad's season — which was all about tough pasts and therapeutic futures. It's up to Ashley what she's comfortable sharing in public, but losing your first love this way is probably something her Bachelorette Season 7 suitors would want to hear about since it seems to have affected her deeply.
