Travis Wall: Dedicated Dancer, Charismatic Choreographer, and Overall Hottie
For this week's featured choreographer fromSo You Think You Can Dance, we're turning to one of our own — former contestant Travis Wall. Seriously, who doesn't love this guy?
We first encountered Travis's adorableness on Season 2 of SYTYCD, when America fell in love with his passionate performances, awarding him with the runner-up title that year. Of course, Travis had been on his toes way before then. Like many other dancers we know, little Travis was born into a family of dance. His mother was owner of Denise Wall's Dance Energy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where Travis started his training at the ripe old age of 3 years old. Can we just take a moment to imagine the cuteness involved in a dancing toddler version of Travis? OMG.
When Travis was nine, he made his professional debut in a Dr. Pepper commercial. Two years later, he won the Junior National Outstanding Dancer Scholarship Award before embarking on a 2-year run of The Music Man on Broadway at the age of 12. So far, so good! His musical-theater stint led to a performance at the 2000 New York City Dance Alliance's closing night gala, which led to Travis winning the New York City Dance Alliance Teen Outstanding Dancer of the Year award, and a 1-year tour with them.
By 18, Travis was ready for SYTYCD. Since his success on the show, Travis has proved to be more than just an amazing dancer — he's also an amazing choreographer. His emotion-driven pieces never fail to impress with their gorgeous lifts and memorable themes.
Here are our Top 3 routines from Travis:
3. "Machine Gun": Ellenore Scott and Jonathan "Legacy" Perez
Travis's Season 6 take on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an intense number starring two married assassins hired to kill each other, was so totally different from his usual style... and we loved. Between Legacy's mastery at tricks and Ellenore's fiery charisma, we had to include this exciting piece on our Top 3 for Travis. Plus, you know how much we adore furniture in our routines.
2. "Fix You": All-Star Allison Holker and Robert Roldan
We hate to make you break out those tissues yet again, but it has to be done, people. Travis choreographed this Season 7 standout for his mother, who was recovering from a major surgery at the time. Goes to show that artists are at their best when they're creating from the heart. Gorgeous!
1. "If It Kills Me": Jeanine Mason and Jason Glover
We know we say this a lot, but this really may be our favorite So You Think You Can Dance routine evah. The perfect dancers, the perfect song, and the perfect steps added up to one of those unforgettable moments from any season of the show. This Season 5 routine was Travis's SYTYCD choreography debut, which explains why they keep asking him to come back. Ah-ma-zing.
