Everything I Need to Know I Learned From Richard Castle

Like most people, we look for our heroes on TV. Richard Castle, a fictional person who sometimes dabbles in reality to pen New York Times bestsellers, is someone from whom we've learned a thing or two about the big, wide world we occupy. Actually, we've learned everything from him. Thanks for nothing, kindergarten.

1. Be nice to your mother.

For all their joke-y banter about how inconvenient it is for them to live together, is there a more loving relationship than the one between Castle and Martha? Castle has shown us that even if your mom is the type who might leave the iron on while rehearsing a death scene, let her move in with you and mooch off of your wealth anyway. More than likely, what she lacks in basic household skills she makes up for in over-sized accessories and good conversation.

2. Remain playful at all costs.

Let nothing, not even murder, get in the way of a good joke.

3. Don't dumb things down for your kids.

Castle isn't strict with Alexis, but he's not a pushover, either. He gives her advice on boys and school, and she conveniently parallels her life to everything that's happening for him professionally so that they can convene and compare notes. But the bottom line is, he treats her like the intelligent person she is and respects her decisions. What novel parenting advice!

4. Find a job you love. If the job pays well, buy a lot of stuff you don't need.

Remember that time travel outfit? Reason enough to sit down and write some books.

5. Pay attention to small details.

Castle finds a needle in a haystack every episode, ninja kicking the intended meaning of that expression right in the face. But not only does he put together clues for murder cases, he also listens carefully to stuff Beckett says, and is thereby able to surprise her with things like autographed photos and scholarship funds. At the very least, it's good to keep one ear (half) open.

6. It's not interfering if you're always right.

True story.
