Cory Monteith Opens Up About Dark, Drug-Addled Past

It wasn’t always easy going for Cory Monteith. The Glee star reveals his dark past in this Sunday’s issue of Parade, saying “I’m lucky on so many counts. I’m lucky to be alive.”

Monteith, who grew up in Canada, dropped out of school when he was he was 16, and used every drug he could get his hands on. “Anything and everything, as much as possible,” he reveals. “I had a serious problem.”

After his family staged an intervention and Monteith went to rehab when he was 19-years-old, Cory reverted back to his bad habits as soon as he was released.

“I stole a significant amount of money from a family member,” he continues. “I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn’t care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, ‘Yeah, it was me.’ It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years.”

He finally decided it was then time to clean up when his family member gave him an ultimatum — either he get clean, or they would press charges. “I was done fighting myself,” he says. “I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”
