Dancing With The Stars

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Chynna Phillips

Sure, you've read our cast bios for Dancing With the Stars Season 13, but there’s a lot more to learn about the 12 celebs who'll be hitting the dance floor on September 19. Here are five bet-you-didn't-know tidbits about Wilson Phillips singer Chynna Phillips.

Chynna, 43, is married to actor William “Billy” Baldwin, part of the larger Baldwin dynasty that also includes actors Alec, Daniel, and Stephen. Chynna told Power to Change that she saw the positive changes that Christianity had brought to Stephen and his wife, Kennya, and she asked them about it. “I’ve always felt a tug on my heart towards Jesus…always. Even as a little girl. But I felt I could never live up to what Jesus would expect of me. [When I saw what He had done in Stephen’s life], it came back to that tug I had felt for so many years," she said.

Chynna became a born again Christian in 2003 and, in 2009, talked to Access Hollywood about her decision to move from Wilson Phillips to Christian rock, releasing an album called One Reason. Interestingly enough, the new album was released just one day before Chynna’s sister, Mackenzie Phillips, released her scathing book, High on Arrival, alleging a 10-year incestuous relationship with their father, John Phillips, of The Mamas and the Papas. Despite stating that she believed Mackenzie, Chynna said she couldn’t vouch for everything in the book.

The fallout from her sister's book coupled with the release of her album and a solo tour, led Chynna to a short stint in rehab in February 2010. Her manager, Lizzie Grubman, announced her check in on Feb. 15 and revealed in a statement that Chynna was out of the center by Feb. 27: "After successfully completing her in-patient treatment for anxiety, Chynna Phillips has happily returned home to celebrate her daughter's birthday."

In June 2010, Chynna talked to Us Weekly about why she and Billy were ready to divorce — and what brought them back together. “I just felt hopeless, like there was not going to be the change I was looking for,” she said. “Trust me, Billy has his own issues too. I'm not the perfect princess here. It's not a one-sided story. But, the truth is that we love each other so very much. We are best friends, and I think I needed to jump off the cliff in order to see what it would really feel like to make that decision, and I knew that wow, that was not the right decision for me, not for my family, not for us. … We are working in therapy together just by taking more time to communicate and talk and laugh and play Scrabble and have sex! … It would have been the biggest mistake of my life if I had divorced Billy. He's an incredible man.”

The ‘90s group is holding on for one more day! The trio — Chynna and sisters Wendy and Carnie Wilson — are reuniting for an album of original music to celebrate their 20 years together, and they were recently featured in the movie Bridesmaids. Also, according to a Sept. 6 story in The Hollywood Reporter, the group is taping a new reality show called The Wilson Phillips Project for the TV Guide Network. “Between touring, recording a new CD and raising nine children, the show promises love, laughter and head bumping!” Carnie Wilson told THR.

The pilot is expected to premiere later this year and will give viewers a peek at the ladies’ child-filled lives outside of singing. Chynna herself has three kids with Billy Baldwin.

All of the Season 13 celebs have causes close to their hearts. Nancy Grace and Ron Artest have already vowed to give any DWTS profits to their favorite charities. Chynna told On the Red Carpet that she is also dancing with a purpose. "I am dancing because there are 40,000 homeless children on the streets of Tijuana and I'm doing every effort to try and get them off the street."

Chynna speaks fluent Spanish and works with the charity Los Angelitos Orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. Right now her “little goal” is to help build a new 60-room dorm for the kids.
