The Top 5 Romantic Moments From the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 Summer Season

Half the time, we watch Pretty Little Liars curled up on our couches, biting our nails and freaking out about “A”’s latest dastardly deed. But the other half we spend obsessing over our favorite relationships, squeeing when they get together, crying when they break up, and swooning during the thrillingly romantic moments that pop up at least once an episode.

The Season 2 summer season saw many ups and downs in all the liars’ romantic entanglements. Between Emily (Shay Mitchell)’s many girlfriends and Ezria’s Jason drama — not to mention Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) leaving again, and that thing with Spoby in the finale that we’re pretending didn’t happen — our emotions were put through the ringer over and over.

Fortunately, there were plenty of heart-warming moments to make up for all the drama. Here are our picks for the Top 5 most romantic moments from the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 summer season:

What we love about Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb is that they’re each other's only constants in the midst of the dysfunction of their lives. So what could be more appropriate for them than a romantic fireside chat, in the woods, with Hanna hiding under a headscarf, while on the run from the sketchy guy stalking Caleb?

This scene, from Season 2, Episode 8, "Save the Date," is when Hanna finally admitted she was scared of Caleb leaving her — like he did in Season 1, and like her dad did (you can't blame the girl for being concerned). "I am not going anywhere," Caleb promised, staring into her eyes, full of reformed bad-boy earnestness. Our hearts completely melted even before the couple got horizontal on the couch.

Emily and Maya (Bianca Lawson) had us at hello — literally. Their reunion in Season 2, Episode 11, "I Must Confess" was simple, but sometimes the quietest moments are the most moving. All they said was "Hello Maya," "Hello Emily," but, of course, it's not what you say — it's how you say it. Between Emily practically giggling with excitement, Maya bouncing in her seat, and both girls beaming, you could tell those hellos really meant Oh my God I missed you how are you I still have feelings for you I missed you so much oh my God I can't believe I'm seeing you again this is amazing. We were surprised they didn't start making out right there at the table, but they were too overwhelmed to do anything other than smile — which is romantic enough for us.

This scene from Season 2, Episode 12, "I Must Confess" is romance of a different sort. It's a big, dramatic, "I'll do anything for love" moment. You know: Fight, die, forgive my girlfriend for dumping me and making out with a hot Brit, that sort of thing.

But in all seriousness, what could be more romantic than literally fighting against two policeman while trying to get to your incarcerated ex, shouting that you don't care about her secrets, you care about her? Toby normally keeps quiet, but he sure knows how to make a statement when he wants to, and our hearts broke as he shouted after a silent Spencer: "I love you!" How was he supposed to know her crazed stalker might kill him if she returned the sentiment?

This is romance, Spoby style, which means something that should seem kind of weird actually ends up being super touching. In Season 2, Episode 3, "My Name Is Trouble," Spencer (Troian Bellisario) sold her sister's engagement ring — and can you blame her? Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto) was engaged to Ian (Ryan Merriman). The failure of that relationship is far from a tragedy. She sold it to buy Toby (Keegan Allen) a beaten up old pickup truck, which doesn't scream grand romantic gesture — it ain't a Ferrari, after all — but the truck was more than a truck: It was Toby's ticket out of his house, which is also the abode of his evil molester/step-sister. It was kinda important, is what we're saying.

So it's no surprise that Toby finally busted out those three little words. The best part? Spencer's quiet, almost tearful "I wanted to say that first," followed by a genuine smile from the little liar who's normally too busy worrying to waste time grinning like a fool. Toby brings out the softer side of Spence, and that's why we love them together.

What, you thought we were going to forget about this? No way. A parking lot may not seem like a romantic setting, but this scene from Season 2, Episode 2, "The Goodbye Look" is definitely the most swoon-worthy moment of the season.

Setting the scene, if you've somehow forgotten: Ezra (Ian Harding) was about to leave the high school for his new job at Hollis, but what was supposed to be a joyful moment turned sour, because Aria (Lucy Hale) called it quits. Ezra gave a moving goodbye speech to his English class, except it was actually about how much he loved Aria and how she'd changed his life. Then he packed his things, and wandered off into the rain to drive out of her life, and we ugly-cried on the sofa.

But wait! Aria, after contemplating his goodbye alone in an empty cafeteria, realized their love is worth the angst, and went dashing through the school in slow-mo, arms flailing, as if she couldn't just call him later or something. Forget logic: In the moment, it really did feel like she needed to catch Ezra right then or risk losing him forever. She made it, of course, bursting into the parking lot and throwing herself into his arms for a passionate kiss as the music swelled, the camera spun, and the sun broke out from behind a cloud. It's as over-the-top as it sounds, but that doesn't make it any less romantic.

Narrowing this down to just five moments was killer, and there are many great scenes we had to leave off. Think we missed a big one? Sound off in the comments below! And don't forget to catch the special Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars on Tuesday, October 18 on ABC Family.
