Exclusive! Kevin Williamson Defends Changes Between The Secret Circle Books and Show
For all of you die-hard fans who are cursing Kevin Williamson and Co. for all the changes made from The Secret Circle books to the new TV series (and Vampire Diaries, too, for that matter,) we've got news for you: He's just as big of a fan as you are!
“What [Smith] does so beautifully, that we all have to tip our hat to, is the fact that she's got a rich premise, and an amazing mythology,” he told Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively at the 2011 TCA Summer Press Tour. “Any hardcore fan of these books will tell you that we've gone out of our way to change this mythology. And we have — but not for any other reason than that we have to try to adapt for TV.” The change in format presents all kinds of new storytelling hurdles, he says — not to mention the fact that nobody knows yet if the show will last for one season... or twelve.
The writing teams for both shows also bring their own material to the table. “We're all still creative people, so we expand on a lot of those ideas,” Kevin explains. “And so yes, we haven't at all stayed on track, but hopefully we've bettered it, hopefully it'll be even more exciting for the fans of the books.”
So if you’re still nitpicking all the changes, here’s our advice: Take a deep breath, relax, and just think of the small-screen adaptations as basically the Best. Fanfics. Ever.
