Chynna Phillips: DWTS Is a Popularity Contest

It seems like a mixed message when even Dancing With the Stars head judge Len Goodman calls Season 13’s Carson Kressley the worst dancer, but then adds that he’s so entertaining he’d vote for Carson himself. What are fans supposed to make of that? To the higher-scoring Chynna Phillips, support for the Carsons, Chaz Bonos and Nancy Graces of DWTS over herself and Kristin Cavallari is a sign that the show is not really about dance skills at all.

"It really does come down to the votes," Chynna told The Huffington Post before her elimination. "And that's kind of sad because it's supposed to be a dance competition, but it's actually a popularity contest, which makes me kind of sad."

DWTS has always been at least partially a popularity contest but this season in particular it looks like certain favorites are just Teflon dancers — low scores don’t stick. Is that a bad thing or is it just a sign that fans are always going to save their favorites?
