Dancing With The Stars

Dance of the Week: J.R. & Karina’s Underscored Samba

The Dancing With the Stars judges can say what they want — they’re only half the battle. We have our own favorite routines each week. For Season 13, Week 5's tribute to the ‘80s, we agree about which couple was the best, but not about their scores.

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff, Samba

Okay, so maybe the dance didn't scream ''80s!" the way so many other routines did this week. The overall theme of DWTS is great dancing and this was a great dance.

J.R. Martinez and his pro partner Karina Smirnoff had a blast in their Samba and it's always fun to watch someone having a genuinely good time. Besides, if you can't bring the heat to Gloria Estefan's "Conga" it's probably 'cause you don't have any heat to bring. J.R. is packing some serious heat — although we're not going to go so far as to call him a "loin-shattering sex machine" a la Bruno Tonioli. (Sigh. Oh, Bruno.) Karina really made J.R. work in this dance — no shuffling for him! — and even Season 7 winner Brooke Burke-Charvet was jealous of J.R.'s Samba rolls. Head judge Len Goodman gave J.R. the ultimate compliment, saying whenever anyone asks him how to do a Samba, he'll say "Have a look at J.R."

All the judges adored the dance and offered no constructive criticism. So why was there just one 10, from Bruno? Not saying the judges owe everyone 10s on Week 5, but the way they gushed over J.R. really left no room for anything but a perfect score. Instead, Carrie Ann Inaba gave J.R. the same “9” she gave Rob Kardashian for his Rumba. Sorry, but no.
