While the Top 12 dancers from Season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance tour the country, we thought we'd look towards the future and help some aspiring dancers prep for the Season 9 auditions. Our friends over at Zimbio already put together a short list of tips, but we had a few more to add:
1. Consider your audition attire
While the voting doesn’t start until the judges narrow the field down to the Top 20 dancers, the city auditions are the first time America gets to meet the hopeful dancers. Therefore, appearance is important. In addition, we can’t help but notice that showing more skin seems to give auditioners an edge. So go ahead … it you got it, flaunt it!
2. Have a good personal story you’re willing to share with America
Ultimately, everyone loves a good heart-wrenching or inspiring story. When a dancer, such as Season 8 winner Melanie Moore, can bring a powerful, personal experience to the stage in addition to great dancing, it makes that dancer stand out from the rest of the crowd and enables an emotional connection with the audience. And it also makes for great TV!
3. Stay healthy and don’t get hurt
When a dancer gets injured or sick and can’t perform on the live shows … arrivederci! Injury and illness meant the demise of many of our favorite contestants in past seasons, including Season 7’s Alex Wong, who snapped his Achilles, and Season 6's Billy Bell, who came down with mono. So, take care of your body, stay hydrated, get rest, and be smart.
4. Dance like there’s no tomorrow
It’s called “dance for your life” for a reason. A dancer can prove only so much in the span of a minute and a half routine. Therefore, every time you step on that stage, you need to leave everything on the dance floor. There are no ‘retakes’ or ‘do agains.’ If you want to show the judges and America how much you love to dance and want to stay in the competition, then dance like there’s no tomorrow.
Get ready dancers, because Season 9 auditions are just around the corner!
