Love triangles, coming out to dead doctor’s moms, and a heart in a box! First things first, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) was tasked with babysitting a fancy, complicated box with a live human heart beating inside of it. Sorry, did we say a heart? We meant a key. The key to Cristina finally finishing that list of dream surgeries. Anyway, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was taken off “vagina squad” duty and put back in the OR (and fixing a botched surgery on Mama O’Malley, no less). Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) struggled with accepting that Andrew (Scott Foley) wants to go to medical school, and then his own medical drama.
It was refreshing to see Grey’s move away from the Season 8 focus of relationship drama (however brief) and get into some bloody and fun medical drama. On the romance side, the ending of Lexie and Jackson’s relationship was a nice twist on the traditional love triangle split, but didn’t really give us that heartbreak that we were searching for. (And the McSteamy-Jackson bromance? We’re ashamed at how hot we think it is.)
However, the writer/patient that was plagued with overzealous fans getting upset over her characters’ relationships was an interesting way for the inhabitants of Shondaland to break down the fourth wall for a small amount of time.
