Dancing With The Stars

Dance of the Week: J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff’s Perfect Week 8 Waltz

The Dancing With the Stars judges can say whatever they want — they’re only half the battle. We have our own favorite routines each week. On Season 13, Week 8 we were cheering along with the crowd for one of the season’s major milestones: the first perfect score.

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff, Slow Waltz

What the world needs now is love, sweet love. And there was a lot to love about this Waltz.

J.R. and Karina have a natural beauty to their dances and the smile on J.R.’s face is always infectious. The studio audience adored the routine and the judges could find no fault with it. But the best part was probably in the Celebriquarium, when first judge Carrie Ann Inaba flashed her 10 paddle … then we all waited to see if Grumpy Len Goodman would finally break his streak. And he did! When his 10 came up, Karina and J.R. jumped up and down like giddy kids and the audience just exploded. At that point we all knew Bruno Tonioli was also holding a 10. When his number came up, the crowd cheered like J.R. and Karina had already won the whole competition. J.R.’s little mini Oscar speech was just icing on the cake. Yes, they got another perfect score later in the night, but you never forget your first time.
