Kanye West Racks Up Seven 2012 Grammy Nominations, Should’ve Gotten Eight

The nominations for the 2012 Grammy Awards are official, and it’s the usual mix of happy surprises, total non-surprises, and major shockers. But one major aw, snap!-worthy snub stands above the rest: that Kanye West’s critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was overlooked for Best Album of the Year.

Sure, Kanye doesn’t need to get greedy — he earned the most nominations (seven!) of any artist — but he has a right to be pissed. After all, missing out on Best Album of the Year probably wasn’t part of his beautiful dark twisted fantasy.

Here’s what the album has going for it: Kanye’s original cover art was banned stateside, he created an epic 30-minute music video for the single “Runaway” (replete with ballerinas), and it boasts a star-studded list of guest artists (Nick Minaj? Check. Elton John? Check.). The man even brags about losing $30 million! Yes, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is arguably Kanye’s magnum opus. In contrast, Bruno Mars’s debut album Doo Wop & Hooligans features songs about being lazy and talking to the moon. Bo-ring!

But aside from the snub, it doesn’t suck to be Kanye West: One song from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, “All of the Lights,” is up for Song of the Year, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and the album itself is up for Best Rap Album. Kanye is also up for three awards with Jay-Z: Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Otis,” and Best Rap Album for Watch the Throne.
