The Bachelor

Season 16 Bachelor Ben Flajnik: 5 Things You Need to Know

Ben Flajnik (pronounced Flannick) was the runner-up for Ashley Hebert’s affections on Season 7 of The Bachelorette. Now he’s the Season 16 Bachelor, whose journey to love will air on ABC beginning Monday, January 2, 2012. Here are a few things to know about the 28-year-old from Sonoma, California:

He's a wino: There's something about The Bachelor and Bachelorette that attracts wine guys. (Perhaps the abundance of wine on-hand during filming?) Season 3 Bachelor Andrew Firestone's family has a winery; Bachelor Pad contestant Jesse Kovacs runs a winery with his brother; and now we have Ben, co-owner of Evolve Winery with his high school friend Michael Benziger. The winery got a huge publicity boost from The Bachelorette and girls apparently swarmed Sonoma hoping for a sign of the future Bachelor.

He's a party boy: Considering the first bit of info we just shared, this may seem obvious. While studying music production at the University of Arizona, Ben started crafting his own wine and beer on the side. He was also a member of the Delta Beta Chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. (Must-see photo: this party pic of him wearing what looks like a black Slash wig, holding a drink and a microphone.) Also, he may have been in a band called Cold Turkey, though that has not been 100 percent confirmed. Still, the music seems to influence his work: His winery’s video "Bottling Evolve's 2009 Sauvignon Blanc" is set to KISS's "Lick It Up." According to Starcasm, Ben and a whopping 73 other underage drinkers were busted by police at a University of Arizona house party in 2003. At the time, Ben reportedly told the local news station, "I understand that they’re doing their job and trying to keep people safe, but the fact there were 50-some-odd police officers here to break up one little college party is a little ridiculous.”

3. His alter ego is "Storm Horse": While promoting Evolve on San Diego 91X, Ben revealed that he’s a hardcore San Diego Chargers fan who participates in “Frightening Lightning” tailgate parties (big keg parties in "section F3"!) and other events under the name "Storm Horse." He also has a creepy/awesome music video called “Cream Dreams” which features Storm Horse engaging in some NSFW shenanigans akin to The Lonely Island sketches on Saturday Night Live. Unfortunately, ABC doesn’t want fans to know too much about the magic that is Storm Horse, and the video was taken down. But you can check out the shot of Storm Horse (pictured right) during his hometown date with Ashley.

4. He’s been in love three times: According to ABC’s Bachelor dispatch, he’s fallen in love three times, with Ashley being the third, but has only proposed the one (failed) time. Who are the other two girls and are their names going to come out of the woodwork? We’re guessing yes. However, it sounds like he has also fallen in love with his dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Scotch. And then there’s always Jennifer Love Hewitt. And Britt Billmaier.

5. He’s Sporty Spice: Ben likes weird stuff like crab fishing, but also sailing, golf, skate boarding, surfing, playing piano, and singing in a tribute band. According to ABC he is also quite handy with a hammer and saw, and loves fixing and building things, as well as landscaping. In his Bachelorette bio, Ben said his favorite sports team is the San Francisco Giants, “the only team that matters.” He considers himself very athletic and won a state championship in soccer. The best trip he had ever been on, by the time he applied for Season 7, was a 2006 World Cup trip to Germany with nine of his friends.
