Lea Michele’s New Year’s Eve “Wins” Worst Box Office Weekend in 3 Years

The Gary Marshall-helmed follow-up to Valentine's Day starring, among a bevy of other A-listers, Glee’s Lea Michele (Rachel) technically won the box office race over the weekend — but only with a somber $13.7 million gross. Just to put that into perspective for you, Valentine's Day opened at $56 million last year. Yeah.

But it's not totally the flick's fault, considering New Year's Eve's opening weekend was overall the worst box office weekend in three years. Ticket sales were down a whopping 20% from this time last year. We're sure New Year's Eve's numbers will spike once the holidays are in full swing. This time of year is notorious for finals week and last-minute Christmas shopping — not a lot of time left over to catch a movie, right? We’re willing to bet that, by next week, people will be desperate to get out of interactive "family time" by going to the movies.

(Also, are we the only ones weirdly intrigued by a movie that involves Zac Efron mackin’ on a much-older Michelle Pfeiffer?)
