J.R. won DWTS Season 13, landed the cover of People Magazine, was on their Sexiest list, found out he's going to be a daddy, visited the Pentagon, went to every event imaginable and now he's about to be the grand marshal of the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA. The parade, better known as the Rose Parade, occurs before the Rose Bowl on January 2.
J.R. talked to TV Guide about how it's going to be much less stressful to smile and wave to folks in a parade than fight in Iraq or dance in front of 20 million people. He also explained his real reason for agreeing to be the grand marshal, which had nothing to do with the legacy of past marshals — including John Wayne, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, Walt Disney and four past presidents.
"I didn't know that when they offered me the opportunity," J.R. admitted to TV Guide. "I said yes because I wanted tickets to the game! I'm a huge football fan so I was, like, 'Hell, yeah! I get to go to the Rose Bowl, man!’ That's what I was excited about."
On a more serious note, he said he also hopes to remind people that we are still at war in Afghanistan and that the war in Iraq will never be completed for the men and women who fought there. "You're going to be seeing a lot of PTSD. You're going to be seeing more of the psychological issues, the internal scars. In that sense, the Iraq war is not over, and will never be."
