Glee Stars Fight Back Against Bullying! Dot-Marie Jones Speaks Out

Glee stars are never ones to shy away from hot topics ― and now Dot-Marie Jones is lending her voice to the fight against childhood bullying!

Coach Beiste’s real-life counterpart is helping to promote an anti-bullying children’s book called Just Like You, and told People magazine recently about a time in her own childhood that she was at the receiving end of taunts by her peers. “I grew really fast… seven inches in six months,” Jones said. “Kids would say comments like, ‘You're so tall, you should have been a man. Are you a man? Are you a woman?’ It still strikes a nerve.”

She added, “Kids don’t realize how powerful words are.”

But Dot-Marie ― who stands at 6’4” ― took those harsh words and turned them into her own brand of success! She went from a weight lifter in high school to an arm-wrestling champ, and was eventually discovered by American Gladiator’s Shirley Eson. A chance encounter with Glee creator Ryan Murphy at the grocery store later and the rest is the stuff of Glee history!

“It doesn't matter what your differences are,” Dot-Marie said of the book, and her journey. “You have to embrace what your likenesses are, and that we're all just like you.”

We love a good success story, and Dot-Marie’s is truly inspirational!

100% of the proceeds from the sale of Just Like You benefit the Just Like You Foundation, which promotes awareness of bullying by “educating children on the values of universal acceptance.”
