Did Darren Criss Succeed in His Opening Night on Broadway? The Reviews Are In!

The reviews are in from Darren Criss’ (Blaine) debut on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying ― and they’re stellar! (Was there really ever a doubt in your mind??)

Darren’s three-week run kicked off on January 3, with a performance marked by “effortless dancing” and “striking charisma,” as per Billboard.com. Though Darren’s nerves (and/or inexperience... it’s hard out there for a newbie!) on the stage may have gotten the better of him in a slightly under-sung “Brotherhood of Man,” the overall take-away from the star turn is that Darren is just that: A STAR!

“Watching Criss's career moves over the past year, it's clear that he's got an innate knowledge of how to make it in his preferred profession,” Billboard said. “His latest stop, Broadway, is no exception.”

Director Rob Ashford is also totally impressed. At Tuesday’s after-party he told Playbill.com, “Everyone did a great job, but Darren and Beau [Bridges] did an amazing job. To take two weeks of rehearsal and go out there in this machine that's been running for a year and just fold in as beautifully as they did… They did a beautiful job.” And Darren’s limited availability because of his day job? No big deal! “I would have taken him for two weeks. I would've taken him for one week — anybody that terrific playing the part.”

That’s high praise!

And as for those nerves... Who wouldn’t have ‘em?! Darren addressed just such a thing in a pre-show interview with Entertainment Weekly, in fact, telling the mag, “Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, I gotta go to your opening night!’  But I’m terrified. I’m like, ‘No! See it at, like, two and a half weeks.’ Theater is a living creature. It takes a while to break in, like a new pair of shoes.” Touche, Mr. Criss!

Following the performance, Darren told Playbill, “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this would ever happen. I'm taking it in my stride and just trying to give it my all and be thankful. This doesn't happen every day.”

We love a story with a happy ending and a dream come true! Congrats, Darren!
