Gabriel Mann: I Wanted to Bring a Darkness to Nolan

Nolan is definitely the breakout character in a breakout show, and it’s thanks to Gabriel Mann’s creative spin on the everyday nerd.
“All I had, originally, were pages of Nolan’s dialogue,” Gabriel explains to The New York Times (yes, The New York Times!).
“I think his character serves the story in a nice way. He’s a Greek chorus for the goings-on in the Hamptons.”
Gabriel was originally asked to play Nolan as a “clean-cut nerd,” but he wanted to bring something darker to the table.
“There were definitely some names thrown at me, like Zuckerberg,” Gabriel explains, “but nobody’s going to do that better than Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network. The only description for Nolan in the script was that he’s a very bad dresser.”
“It’s an interesting dichotomy. He has built this castle made of money that separates him from everybody else,” Gabriel continues.
“He doesn’t have social connections. People meet him purely because of his money. What does that do to a person over time?
