Damon and Elena’s Kiss Spurs Death Threats From Vampire Diaries Fans

Fact: Vampire Diaries fans take our show seriously. But there’s a difference between being passionate and taking it too far. When IGN spoke with The Vampire Diaries’ executive producer Kevin Williamson at the Television Critics Association event, he revealed that both he and Julie Plec received all kinds of hate tweets after sexy Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) kissed his brother’s ex Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) in Season 3, Episode 10, “The New Deal” — including a few death threats!

“That night … I texted [Julie Plec] and was like, ‘Did you get some death threats on your Twitter?’ And she goes, ‘I got some death threats and some other unseemly things.’ I go, ‘Yeah, I got a couple of 'f*gs' and a couple of death threats.’ We were listing all the bad things they were saying,” Williamson said. Ew. Not cool, tweeters.

On the bright side, Williamson said he’s “happy that people are engaged.” Well, if there ever was a way to rationalize a death threat...

Regardless, Williamson has no regrets about taking the Delena storyline to the next level. “It's one of those things where I felt like we knew it was going to anger the Stefan and Elena fans, but we also… I felt that we had earned it,” he says. And perhaps more importantly, Williamson says Damon also deserved the smooch of all smooches after all the trouble he’s gone through for TVD’s resident good girl recently. “He's proven some worth and he's done some good, solid things for Elena,” says Williamson.

That doesn’t change the fact that Elena is Stefan’s ex, and making out with her was an epic violation of vampire bro code. And given that this is Mystic Falls, where nothing stays secret for long, sooner or later the whole town, including the uber-angry younger Salvatore, will know about the kiss.

“It's just going to make it that much more interesting,” Williamson teases, adding that it “complicates things.” And it also leaves room for a shirtless Salvatore brawl — something we will never send hate mail about!
