Randy Jackson Says American Idol “Is Still the Best TV Show of Its Kind”
As American Idolgears up to launch Season 11 on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, the show’s judges spoke with The New York Times about their faith in the Idol’s originality and caliber of the candidates.
“We are the original,” Randy Jackson told The New York Times at a press conference on January 9, 2012. “We kind of invented this whole game that everybody is now copying. And I say that they are copying it, right?” Asked about Idol competitor The Voice, Randy said the NBC show highlights “second-chance artists.”
Ken Warwick, a producer on Idol, added that part of the Fox show’s draw is that it gives relative unknowns a chance at instantaneous fame. “Our show is open to everybody. It’s much better for our audience if they know that this kid was cleaning windows two months ago, and this week they’re No. 1 in the downloads.”
